Padres Receiving Trade Interest In Brad Hand

May 25, 2017 7:48 AM

The San Diego Padres recently told other clubs that they are "open for business" and reliever Brad Hand is receiving a lot of interest, according to a report.

Hand, 27, has emerged as a useful bullpen arm since the Padres claimed him off waivers from the Miami Marlins last April.

Since then, Hand has posted a 2.65 ERA ball with a 146-to-46 K/BB ratio in 115 1/3 innings.

Draft-Pick Compensation Varies Due To Team's Economic Circumstances

May 26, 2017 11:23 AM

Major League Baseball's new collective bargaining agreement has changed draft-pick compensation to vary due to a team's economic circumstances.

For a selection to be awarded between the first round and Competitive Balance Round A of the 2018 MLB Draft, three conditions must be met:

1. The team that loses the free agent is a revenue-sharing recipient, based on its revenues and market size.

2. The free agent rejects a qualifying offer during a 10-day period after the World Series.

3. The amount of guaranteed money in the player's new, free-agent contract is at least $50 million.

According to industry sources, 16 clubs currently meet the first of those qualifications: the Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays.

Nationals Nearly Acquired David Robertson Before Season

May 24, 2017 7:47 AM

The Washington Nationals have bullpen issues, but they nearly acquired help before the regular season.

They were close to completing a trade with the Chicago White Sox for David Robertson this spring. According to executives close to the talks, Washington would have sent left-hander Jesus Luzardo and infielder Drew Ward to Chicago for Robertson.

The White Sox would have eaten about half of Robertson's salary, but the deal hit a snag over money.

Red Sox Scouting Todd Frazier For Possible Trade

May 23, 2017 8:43 AM

The Boston Red Sox have been scouting Todd Frazier given the poor production they've received from third base this season.

The Red Sox completed a major trade with the Chicago White Sox this offseason, acquiring Chris Sale for a package that included Yoan Moncada.

Boston has Rafael Devers in the Minor Leagues, but want to give him more time to develop.

Frazier is owed $12 million this season.

Quintana is under team control for $38 million through 2020.

Ryan Braun Close To Gaining Full No-Trade Power

May 10, 2017 8:05 AM

Ryan Braun will become a "10 and 5" player this Sunday, giving him full veto power over any trade from the Milwaukee Brewers.

"When it comes to the trade stuff, I don't think it's very relevant," Braun said of his pending veto power.

Brewers general manager David Stearns agreed, using the same words: "not relevant."

When a player has been in the Major Leagues 10 years, including at least the last five with the same club, they gain full no-trade rights.

In Braun's case, the "10 and 5" rights don't matter much because presently there are only six teams to which he can be traded without his permission. He also entered the season with four years and $76 million remaining on his contract.
